Environmental Mini PSA

Posted by Gayle Luff in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Sunday, May 12, 2024 at 11:51 pm

  1. Provide a summary of the contents of your video and a rationale for why YOU chose this topic, in paragraph form.

What did you do well and what could you have done differently?

What was the most meaningful part of the experience of creating the PSA?

My video has a demo of how to care for your home so you don’t get mold and what can happen if you’re around mold for too long. I think it is important for everyone to have a nice home to live in and how to care for your house if it ever gets to that point . A lot of people aren’t able to afford a profession clean so using vinegar, a household item, is super easy. It’s easy for SAHP to clean up mold since it has to sit after you apply it. I personally had mold and learned that vinegar helps clear it up.

I think I did the video well, but I think I shouldn’t have procrastinated so much.

I think the meaningful part is educating people and keeping everyone healthy.

Water Contamination PSA by Ahzra Blackwell

Posted by Ahzra Blackwell in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Sunday, May 12, 2024 at 11:49 pm

In my group’s PSA we discussed water contamination through the knowledge of three people in different fields that connect with each other. The PSA explained how water contamination happens, why it happens, its effects on biotic factors, the leading cause of it in Philadelphia, and ways to make the water safer. I chose this topic because water is a big part of everyday life for everyone. I know water is a very important asset to life so the great amount of contaminated water scared me.

In more detail water contamination happens when more chemicals get into the water than usual and the water becomes more acidic. Stormwater drains are where water contamination comes from the most in Philadelphia which happens due to the drains having toxins and trash enter them, specifically pet waste and leftover paint. Many species are affected by water contamination, one being marine life and water acidification. Humans can get gastrointestinal illnesses such as vomiting, diarrhea and cramps. Some of the ways to help resolve the issue include: practicing water conservation, reducing plastic waste, throwing away trash, and taking jogs/walking.

I think that I participated well but, since I’m involved in school activities I had to miss out on helping my group for task one due to the due dates. There were two main meaningful parts of creating the PSA to me. The first part was learning about the effects water contamination has on biotic factors because I am one myself and so are the people and animals I love. When finding out about the ways I can reduce water contamination I began wanting to partake in activities I haven’t done before for not only mine but everyone’s future. The second part was doing it with my friends. Actually recording the PSA with my friends has been a great experience for me because we didn’t only learn but had fun doing it which made the experience both meaningful and memorable.

Food insecurity

Posted by Sekou Cisse in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Sunday, May 12, 2024 at 11:32 pm

The reason why we chose food insecurity is because we noticed that it is a very big issue. We felt as though it didn’t get enough attention and we made it our goal to shed light on it. In the video, we gave a definition of what food insecurity is, how It affects people, and also what regions of Philly It affects. We also tried to give it a light-hearted spin so that way it didn’t seem too dull and boring.

What we did well was give good definitions and make it entertaining. What I feel like we could’ve done differently was go a little more in-depth with what we were talking about but other than that I would say it came out pretty good.

I would say doing the research behind it only because you really have to know what you’re talking about. It was also really fun but we had to do a lot of organizing because some days certain people weren’t there and it made it more difficult

Food Insecurity

Posted by Kennedy Holman in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Sunday, May 12, 2024 at 10:29 pm

My PSA highlights food insecurity in Philadelphia, showing its impact on health and the environment. It calls for support for local initiatives to address this issue, emphasizing its importance for human well-being and environmental sustainability. I chose this topic because food insecurity is vital to address because it affects human health, exacerbates poverty, and disrupts ecosystems. Understanding it fosters empathy, drives action for social justice, and promotes sustainable food systems for a healthier future.

Something I would do differently is make my video more visually appealing

The most meaningful part was learning the severity of this issue in our community and seeing so many non profit organizations that work everyday to spread awareness to the problem and help our community and people through this issue

Excessive heat in homes

Posted by Shanya Vance in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Sunday, May 12, 2024 at 10:21 pm

In this video, we talked about heat islands. They form around homes with a lot of sunshine and not a lot of trees. This is important because most of Philadelphia itself is a heat island. I picked this topic because excessive heat isn’t talked about enough and can be very dangerous. During the Summer, without air conditioning, and central air houses can be above outside temperatures. My group members also live in areas of Philadelphia without a lot of tree coverage.

I think something that could have been different if we could have shown how little to no trees in our neighborhoods. That would have been more visually pleasing to the reader to understand how that effect houses.

The most meaningful part of the video is explaining what things you could do to prevent excessive heat.

Waste Management

Posted by Aaliya Shoatz in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Sunday, May 12, 2024 at 9:47 pm

My PSA (Public Service Announcement) is around Waste Management. My goal is to promot waste control around the globe because it is something countries other than the United States severly suffer from. I chose this topic because I don’t really like trash, and I realized that as I’ve done reasearch for this project, and gotten older, monitoring things that could potentially harm our Earth has become top priority.

Something I could have done differently for this project was actually showing my face in my PSA, and focusing on uncontrolled Waste in Philadelphia instead of aroud the globe. I also regret not being able to put in clips and images of waste here in Philadelphia so the problem can feel real to Philadelphia’s residents.

The most meaningful part of my PSA creating process was how smoothly it went. Ironically, it is the end of the year, and also the first and likely last project that was easygoing and manageable all year.

Excessive Heat in Homes

Posted by Faith Washington in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Sunday, May 12, 2024 at 7:45 pm

In this video, we talked about heat islands. They form around homes with a lot of sunshine and not a lot of trees. This is important because most of Philadelphia itself is a heat island. I picked this topic because of my own experience living in a heat island. During the Summer, without air conditioning, my house can be just as hot as outside. My group members also live in areas of Philadelphia without a lot of tree coverage.

I think something that could have been different if we could have shown where we lived and how little to no trees there are that would make our house overheated during really hot and sunny days. That would have been more visually pleasing to the reader to understand how that works.

The most meaningful part of the video is explaining what things you could do to keep yourself cool.

Ty-kira Q3 benchmark reflection

Posted by Tykira Booker in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Friday, March 22, 2024 at 12:35 pm

1. Both ecosystems and human societies benefit from biodiversity and natural resources, which offer basic services like clean air, water, and climate regulation. 2. Deforestation, overuse of resources, pollution, and climate change are just a few examples of how human activity has drastically changed Earth's natural processes, resulting in habitat degradation, biodiversity loss, and other environmental issues. 3. To live more sustainably, people can support conservation efforts and projects, embrace sustainable practices in agriculture and energy production, minimize waste and pollution, encourage the use of renewable energy sources, and protect natural ecosystems. 1. Through the project's practical insights into environmental concerns and the significance of striking a balance between economic development and environmental protection, I gained a better grasp of sustainability. 2. What startled me the most was how dependent the sector is on natural resources and how that affects the environment. It emphasized the necessity of sustainable methods to reduce environmental damage while addressing societal demands. 3. I researched sustainability programs, analyzed data, and worked with team members to generate recommendations as part of my contribution to our group effort. I was pleased with the thorough approach we took on our project and our successful integration of social, economic, and environmental factors.

Quadir Quater 3 Benchmark Reflection

Posted by Quadir Colclough in Environmental Science · Sasso-Chryst · C on Thursday, March 21, 2024 at 9:02 am

1) We see that it's important that we don't use up all the natural resources in our environment. 2) Human actions that are associated with altering earth's natural systems are littering, use of transportation, and production of products through factories. 3) They can live more sustainable by converting the energy they use now to a more eco-friendly energy 1) This project depend my understanding by showing me there are other ways to live using different type of energies, I learned this through watching my classmates present. 2) What surprised me most was the materials used to make fabrics of the clothing industry. This surprised me because I didn't think petroleum was used to make clothing. 3) I contributed to the project by making the model and doing some of the slides. I was proud of the slides, I thought they came out great.
