Natural Disasters & Earth System: Flood in Sierra Leone

Natural Disasters & Earth Systems
Reflection:

The Earth is made up of four spheres. The systems are Atmosphere, Biosphere, Geosphere, and Hydrosphere. The Atmosphere is the mass of air that is around the Earth to protect it. Biosphere is responsible for maintaining life. Geosphere is the Earth's crust and matter/land. Lastly, hydrosphere is all water that makes up the Earth.

Each system plays a role in Natural Disasters. When researching about Sierra Leone I found out that when system is affected by climate change it can trigger another system to react. For example, the heavy rains (hydrosphere) in Sierra Leone caused over saturated grounds which triggered a mudslide. Understanding environmental science can cause awareness to what human activities effects our Earth systems. To create a sustainable future I think that it can be possible reduce all the human activities (i.e. mining, construction) then that can benefit the systems.

Natural Disasters & Earth Systems
In this project, we talk about the four different systems of the Earth. Each and every system play a part into the other. I say this because if there is to much rain which is part of the atmosphere, then the ground will get soaked causing mudslides among other things. It's imperative that we understand how their disasters work so that we are able to predict what will be the outcome, how we can fix the damages. Learning about natural disaster also help with just getting a better understanding of the earth and how it works. As time has passed we have seen dramatic changes in the earth. I've only been on this earth for 18 years and I can see big changes from when I was little to now. The earth is changing and we need to change with it, this means bettering ourselves. Being more conscious of how we use things, our pollution, we need to take a step forward in the right direction so that our home can be sustainable for us

The Earth System is broken down into four different processes; those processes include the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and geosphere. Each process plays a huge role in the way the Earth operates but all essentially play a different role. When a natural disaster occurs its very likely that it will bounce between all four of these processes causing each system to be affected. When researching for this project I not only enjoyed learning about the earth system but learning about all the different natural disasters. After this project and now knowing what I know I feel as though its essential for everyone to know information about these topics to prepare and have knowledge for a natural disaster incase it ever occurs around them.

After looking over my peers projects and reading my comments I think I could of added more information and more creativity to my project. I had the intention that we were presenting our info-graphic to the class so me and my group intended on just elaborating on our information to the class during out presentation. If we knew we were doing our gallery work me and my group members would of included more information on our info-graphic.

Natural Disasters and Earth System Research

​1. How do the earth systems affect each other?
Earth's systems can affect each other by natural disasters. They have a strong influence on everything around them which can cause a chain of events. For example, an earthquake can split land through the middle, affecting the land (geosphere),but it can also split in the ocean and cause a tsunami, that could wash out everything it's close to on land (hydrosphere). And then tornado can just rip anything to spreads because of hot and cold temperature winds chasing each other (atmosphere). They all influence the living organisms because they are very dangerous and life threatening (Biosphere).

2. How can an understanding of environmental science aid in handling natural disasters? 
They can help us be prepared for what ever natural disaster comes next so we can be away from harm. Like if an earthquake just started, we could predict if it will cause a tsunami depending on where it happened.

3. What efforts can we make to create a sustainable future?
We could create 100% life proof safe houses to keep ourselves in when when ever natural disasters happen or leave to be safe.

Reading about this I was really surprised, but I was told that this was the season for natural disasters. I didn't remember this happening last year, but I know this year is really shocking to me because we're frequently hearing about natural disasters every week.
 
After the presentations, a common theme that everyone said was the fact there was too many words and they were condensed which made it hard to read. They thought everything else was positive though.

Climate Change and Hurricane Irma

“Hurricane Irma was not caused by climate change at all…” Climate change works to heat the ocean and increase the sea levels. In turn, that helps to make the hurricane more devastating: more heat helps propel the power of the hurricane, leading to the kind of destruction that has made its way across the Americas twice over the last week. "For climate change, it’s important to note that climate change has already caused higher sea levels, so any storm surge is happening on top of a higher initial level, leading to more coastal flooding," said Chris Holloway, a tropical storm expert at the University of Reading. "Also, climate change leads to increased rainfall for a storm of a given strength, leading to increased freshwater flooding. Climate change also likely increases the probability of storms reaching an extremely high intensity." Is Earth's Climate Changing? Earth's climate is always changing. In the past, Earth's climate has gone through warmer and cooler periods, each lasting thousands of years. The climate of a region or city is its typical or average weather. The biosphere is unique. So far there has been no existence of life elsewhere in the universe. In order to put oxygen into the air, there had to be plants, which take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen in the process of photosynthesis. For example, plants (biosphere) grow in the ground (geosphere), but to survive they absorb water (hydrosphere) and carbon dioxide (atmosphere). When wind brushes up against water, the wind will get cooler. So cities with large bodies of water near them, such as Chicago, will get much cooler during the winter. This is known as the sea breeze effect, and is also an example of how the earths systems affect each other. Knowledge of global warming for example can help us prevent it for our future generations. Cutting down on fossil fuels is probably the best solution for putting a stop to global warming. Although it would be far in the future, it is worth the change.

Natural Disasters and Earth System Research - Cristian Fernandez

Earth systems can affect each other in many different ways, these interactions often happen during large natural events or disasters but also happen in our everyday lives. The hydrosphere interacts with the geosphere by moving large amounts of land between and away from places creating new formations and diminishing others. In natural disasters the importance of the different environmental systems is exaggerated because the changes are on such a large scale they force their way into other systems. To explain my last point, when a hurricane happens mainly the atmosphere and the hydrosphere interact with each other, but when the conditions of this event become extreme the geosphere can be affected because the combination of water and wind can move large amounts of land to the sea or other parts of the land. The understanding of natural science is key to aiding in handling natural disasters. This is because without the understanding of how hurricanes work or why earthquakes happen it is impossible to correctly prepare for them. This lack of knowledge can be the cost of billions of dollars in recovery from a natural disaster. For creating a sustainable future the thing we have to think about is preparation for these events, it seems like a waste of time to create things to try to prevent natural disasters. Except for sea walls and few other things that can completely solve an issue it should be our primary focus on designing houses that can withstand more extreme weather and buildings that can hold up to larger earthquakes.

Earthquakes- Natural Disasters and Earth System Research

There are a few different earth systems but they are all connected in some way. Whenever something happens to 1, the others are also affected. Natural disasters usually makes this very obvious. For example, Earthquakes start out by a disruption in the Geosphere. This usually directly affects the atmosphere by releasing methane into the air and the hydrosphere by causing huge waves. A tsunami would form and hit the nearest city. This causes pollution in the water and the biosphere is directly affected by this. We will able to find way to stop this with more studying and research. We may be able to predict events that would affect our systems and prepare for them. In order to be prepared for the future we must learn more about this stuff. It would save a lot of lives and it may even allow the natural systems of the earth to last longer.

I think this project turned out pretty good. I wish we didn't use so may words but our information was there. It turned out much better than I expected. Next time we should try to limit the amount of words we use to make it more interesting to read.

Earth systems & Earthquake in Mexico City

​Reflection : 

    The Earth System consists of four major spheres. The Earth System is made up of the Atmosphere, Geosphere, Hydrosphere & Cryosphere, and Biosphere. The atmosphere is the mass of the air surrounding the Earth. The geosphere is made up of matter that makes up the Earth. The hydrosphere is all the water that makes up the Earth. The cryosphere is the frozen part of the hydrosphere. Last, but not least is the Biosphere which is where all living things live.

   The Earth System has many different spheres that affect the Earth in many ways. The spheres work in different ways, but they don't only affect the Earth they affect each other too. Natural disasters are a perfect example on how the spheres affect each other. When a natural disaster occurs all of the spheres are affected by it, for example during an Earthquake the atmosphere releases methane into the atmosphere which has an affect on the biosphere because it has to deal with life, and the human beings living on Earth. The understanding of environmental science would help aid during these natural disasters because it would help us gain more information about what is occurring, and would also help us prepare better for the disaster. It would also help us predict more about when these disasters will occur. The efforts we could make for the future is just to prepare for it, and know how to prepare / do during these disasters because we can never predict when a disaster could happen. I believe we should also talk/ learn more about these disasters, and how we can recover from them. 
 
    In class today we did a gallery work to present our projects. We had to write feedback for our peers. While reviewing the feedback, my group and I received positive/ good feedback. People liked how we presented our information, and the pictures we included. The negative feedback we received was about how we put to much information, and how we should've made it shorter.

Natural Disasters Research:

Earth's Systems: Biosphere- the regions of the surface, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of the earth (or analogous parts of other planets) occupied by living organisms. Cryosphere: Is the frozen water part of the Earth system. Beaufort sea and North Alaska. The one part of cryosphere is the ice that is found in the water which includes frozen parts of the ocean that surrounds Antarctica and the Arctic. Hydrosphere ~ Hydrosphere is all of the waters on the Earth’s surface (Oceans, Lakes, etc.); including water above the surface, like in clouds. There are reasons why natural disasters happen. Since there are different ways a natural disaster can occur, having knowledge on the different earth systems they happen in is essential. These Earth systems include: Atmosphere: The blanket of gas on the surface of a planet or satellite. The atmosphere of the Earth is about 80% nitrogen and 20% oxygen Geosphere: Any of the almost spherical concentric regions of matter that make up the earth and its atmosphere, as the lithosphere and hydrosphere.

Reflection: During the gallery walk, I noticed other groups did a very good job at explaining the different systems and how they affect each other. I think my group could of did it a little better with explanation. The feed back that we got was good. Other groups were saying we did a nice job presenting, it was creative, designed well but then others wanted to see a video. Overall, I think our project was good and we all worked very well on it equally.
