My name is Amir Lomax-Osaghae and for my senior capstone, I decided to do a celebration for student-athletes who are underappreciated in our school. With that being said, alongside with my colleague and close friend Chris Jones, we put together a sports award assembly; recognizing and shining a light on all the student-athletes here at SLA Beeber for their hard work and sacrifices, as they proudly represented our school throughout the school year. As far as the process, when it came to organizing our capstone, we had a pretty easy time getting the assembly set up and ran due to the outstanding coaches and staff here at SLA Beeber. From this capstone, we have picked a tremendous amount of organization and leadership skills while also earning how to properly and better manage our time. After we present we hope to shine a better light on student-athletes and hope that we post it down to a senior next year to want to do the same thing that we did and then on and on.

For my capstone I worked with a student who has ASD. Every Thursday I would go and talk to him, play charades, draw, and even just do check ins. As time went on I started enjoying the time spent with the student so my time with him increased to twice a week. I started keeping a record of the different things I did with him and different drawings that were made. I love helping others and when I come in and help this particular student I am able to help him feel comfortable in his own community. I know how hard it is making friends and to socialize with people and that needs to be changed.

When I first met the student I actually thought it would be difficult working with him because I myself am shy even after being apart of this community for 4 years so I know how he feel for his first year. I still get shy but working with this student has been a pleasure because we both have been stepping out of our comfort zone with each other by playing charades and acting different things out with one another, by showing our art skills and even just making conversation about how our week has been. Many people don’t know what ASD is or what having autism means so here is my awareness presentation on what ASD is, effects of having ASD, different types and the relationship it has with social skills.

For the past four years, I have seen myself, friends, and the whole senior class grow into young adults. We went from being strangers to friends and friends to family. It has been a process to lead us this far with the drama and nonsense. We lost a few people on the way but gained a lot more.  The reason I am saying this is because I am doing a documentary on the entire senior class. When we first received this project, I had no idea what I wanted to do. Then the thought came to my mind to do a documentary. I found this interesting to do because it’s different from what other people would do. Also, it would be a great way to look back at our growth into one whole video instead of multiples. I know when my classmates see the final product they might get a little teary eyed and I only say this because the faster graduation approaches the more emotional we get and it’s no other way to sit and watch you and your friends grow together in four years. This was not easy as I thought it would be. I had to find a lot of old images and videos from others and myself.  That was not my only focus. My final plan is to ask all the senior teachers how they feel to see us grow as much as we did. Overall,I hope it turns out the way I want.
