For privacy reasons we will not post our video.

In this unit, we learned that despite our differences, as people, we’re all really the same. For example, some people may have the same preferences for activities, music or anything else- but we all still love things and like it when people accept that. We all express ourselves differently and that’s fine. Unfortunately, we “wear masks” to hide things we may not want to express, such as sexual orientation, race or religion. Society makes it really difficult to maintain fringe elements of a person while accepting them into society; often times, people feel really insecure about their fringe aspects. These reservations are not unwarranted.
As a class, we also explored discrimination and how it affects our world today. Gender, race, sexuality and religion are all reasons why people may be treated unfairly; misconceptions and hate lead to discrimination, where people are treated as less than another group. When viewing the situation this way, it’s understandable why people would feel uncomfortable sharing themselves. Discrimination really became the main focus of our unit: we all tried to understand discrimination more and see the varying ways in which it presents itself.
Creating our WeVideo gave us an opportunity as a group to explore ourselves, as well as aspects of one another. We learned to cooperate effectively as a group while preserving our individuality. We chose to incorporate both the fringe and mainstream aspects of ourselves, in order to make a more complete picture of our identity. We’d never really understood how different we really are from one another-- or, in other instances, how similar. Completing this project has made up consider being more open-minded overall, as we had a really interesting and fulfilling experience creating this video.

Discrimination- mistreating individuals based on misconceptions about a group that a person may belong to, such as race, gender, religion or sexual orientation. Discrimination is a huge problem in American society; the only way to create a more open and accepting society is to embrace our differences, while still respecting those who we may not agree with or who may not agree with us.

Wendi: I am posting my individual video because it describes who I am and why I am who I am.
Wendi's artist statement

People ask, “why do we express ourselves?” We express ourselves because we want people to understand how we feel. People also express themselves to get out any emotions they can’t get out by talking. Technology affects the way we express ourselves because with technology it makes it easier for people to communicate to others on how they feel. Technology also makes people feel better when behind a screen and not in front of people who makes them feel uncomfortable. The way I expressed myself in my video is very simple. I used the quote “Friends are Family and Family is Life,” which means I treat my friends more important than how I treat my family. I express myself through friends because my friends are the main people I talk to and can really be myself around. When it comes to family, they may be life, but I can’t be myself. They are very judge mental and just weird. My video tells and shows people that I am fun, weird and crazy but also take things seriously sometimes. So they way I express myself is by being myself because being myself is all that matters.
Why do I like to express? It’s not that I like it, I love expressing myself. Expressing myself is letting people know who I am. It’s letting people understand me and get to know the person that they don’t know as a person. This means that they get to know the real me and not the mainstream person that I show more often. Expressing myself in a way that no one would ever know is just amazing. Using writing, drawings, and even songs can express someones deepest emotions.
